THE CONSERVATION CENTRE

Conservation centre
Sopenkorvenkatu 9 B

The Conservation Centre of the Lahti City Museum serves all the museum's units.
Care of the museum collections primarily follows the principles of preventing damage in advance. Preventive conservation protects museum objects against irregular climatic conditions, too much light, pests and detrimental treatment. The purpose is to arrange safe exhibition and storage conditions for objects.

♦ Cataloguing

The cleaning and support of museum objects, the prevention of further damage and repairs to damages all affect the structure of museum objects. Structural, or actual, conservation is done by a specialist conservator, limiting action to necessary preservation based on research and methods and materials accepted in the conservation profession.

The conservators also provide advice and instruction for the staff of local museums in the Päijät-Häme region and for private individuals in matters relating to the storage and maintenance of objects. They do not, however, engage in conservation work outside the museum.
