The operating area of the Lahti City Museums is the whole of Päijät-Häme. The museum’s main archaeological duties are the protection, management and preservation of the archaeological heritage in Päijät-Häme and the dissemination of related information.

The museum provides official statements regarding land use planning and construction, and determines the preservation and research needs of archaeological sites. The museum also participates in governmental negotiations and a variety of projects and working groups as an expert on the archaeological cultural environment.

The majority of the museum’s archaeological field work consists of site visits based on customer inquiries and reports of finds and ancient relics. The museum also carries out terrain work, inspection visits and archaeological surveys in connection with town planning and a variety of land use projects. In addition, the museum arranges its own research projects from time to time. The museum’s services also include guidance and counselling related to the archaeological heritage of Päijät-Häme and its safeguarding. You can contact the museum in any related matters.
